According to statistics recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), liposuction was the second most popular procedure in 2015 and tummy tuck was the fifth most popular procedure. The only procedure that topped liposuction was breast augmentation.
Liposuction is likely growing in popularity as a result of Smartlipo TriPlex™ technology, which is different than other liposuction and Smartlipo procedures. Smartlipo TriPlex utilizes three different wavelengths of energy to decrease swelling, melt fat, and tighten skin. Past iterations of this liposuction technique did not combine three different lasers, so they weren’t as effective.
Surveyed patients have reported a 94% satisfaction rate after Smartlipo. Because Smartlipo also encourages collagen growth, skin in the treated areas can gradually become healthier and more toned in the weeks and months that follow the procedure.
Tummy tucks can be used in combination with liposuction to achieve a toned, sculpted look, which is likely why tummy tucks have seen a 9% increase since 2014. Liposuction can help contour stubborn areas of fat, but a tummy tuck is the only way to tighten loose, stretched skin and repair abdominal muscles. Moms who are done having children often utilize tummy tucks to repair abdominal muscles and remove loose skin. People who have lost a lot of weight are also good candidates for the procedure.
ASPS President Dr. David H. Song said many factors contributed to the 115% increase in overall procedures since 2000, including lower plastic surgery costs and less invasive procedures. As technology has advanced, recovery time has decreased, and patients can get back to their day-to-day quicker than ever before.
