Liposuction is not a substitute for dieting and consistent exercise. It is appropriate for removing stubborn fat deposits that don't respond to traditional weight loss methods. During your initial consultation, we will determine whether you are a candidate for liposuction or another procedure. The best candidates for liposuction are at a normal weight with firm, elastic skin and have distinct areas of unwanted fat. Common treatment areas, pictured below, include:
- Hips, buttocks, and thighs
- Upper arms
- Chin, cheeks, and neck
Although age is not a major consideration, older patients with decreased skin elasticity may not achieve the same results as younger patients with tighter skin.
How Much Does Liposuction Cost?
The cost for liposuction procedures involves multiple factors including the size and number of areas being treated. At SurgiSpa, Smartlipo typically costs $2,499 for the first area and $999 for each additional area. There are added costs for use of the skin tightening laser and procedure room fees.
When choosing a liposuction provider, Dr. Cambeiro advises you to consider the surgeon's qualifications and experience over price. This is no time to compromise your safety or the quality of your results. We offer simple financing options that may help you afford your procedure when the time is right for you.

Why Dr. Cambeiro Prefers

- Minimized swelling and bruising for quicker recovery1
- Firmer and tighter skin through increased collagen production1
The Liposuction Procedure
Dr. Cambeiro performs liposuction surgery as an outpatient procedure assisted by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The surgery takes about 2 to 5 hours, depending on the amount of correction required and whether liposuction is combined with other procedures.
Dr. Cambeiro primarily uses local anesthesia for his liposuction patients, but he also offers general anesthesia. Once anesthesia is administered, the fat is infused with a highly diluted local anesthetic to distend the fat cells, which makes it easier to extract them and improves Dr. Cambeiro's ability to contour the areas more smoothly.
Through a tiny incision, he inserts a narrow tube, or cannula, through which he vacuums the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer, breaking up the fat cells and suctioning them out. The suction action is provided by a vacuum pump or a large syringe.
If you are having multiple sites treated, Dr. Cambeiro then moves on to the next area, working to keep the incisions as inconspicuous as possible. At the conclusion of this procedure, an elastic compression garment is placed over treated areas to control swelling and to reduce the risk of fluid buildup beneath the skin.
What to Expect After Surgery
After surgery, you are monitored for 1 to 2 hours in the recovery room. You will need to have an adult drive you home and stay with you for the first few days. If you live out of the area, plan to stay locally for a couple of days.
This patient visited Dr. Cambeiro for liposuction of the trunk and extremities. By carefully removing fat from her waist, hips, and upper outer thighs, Dr. Cambeiro not only reshaped the patient's abdomen, but enhanced the shape of her buttocks as well.
Through liposuction of the trunk, Dr. Cambeiro gave this patient a flatter, firmer abdominal area.

Recovery After Liposuction
It's important to understand what to expect for your recovery after liposuction and what you can do to make this process as smooth as possible. Keep in mind that if you are having another plastic surgery procedure along with liposuction, such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation, there will be additional factors to consider during recovery.
Wear Your Compression Garment
You will return home with treated areas wrapped in compression garments to help control swelling and assist in contouring the skin back down to the underlying muscle. You need to wear your compression garment for approximately a month as directed by Dr. Cambeiro.
Take Your Prescription Medication
You will need to take antibiotics for the first 5 days after surgery to lower the risk of infection. Prescription medication will help with the pain, but a feeling of soreness might persist for several days or several weeks.
Expect Some Fluid Drainage
Because the fat in treated areas is saturated with fluid during surgery, you will likely have some fluid drainage from your incisions. The amount of drainage can be dramatic if large areas are treated, so have plenty of clean towels on hand to protect clothing, car seats, and mattresses. The drainage typically subsides within 48 hours.
Return to Work
Most patients can return to school and non‐strenuous jobs in a few days to a week, and those with more strenuous jobs can return to physical work in 1 to 2 weeks.
It's important to be patient after your surgery. It may take you at least 6 weeks to begin feeling normal again. The skin in treated areas may feel numb and very hard to the touch initially, but it will soften with time. You might feel depressed or anxious initially; however, these feelings will subside as pain fades away and swelling subsides to reveal your improved contours.
Things to Avoid During Recovery
- Do not drive until you are ready to return to normal daily activity and have stopped taking all narcotic medications.
- Avoid vigorous exercise such as swimming, jogging, aerobics, and weight training for about a month; however, moderate exercise is encouraged.
- Do not drink alcohol as it can cause you to retain fluid and delay your recovery.
Final Liposuction Result
If your expectations are realistic, you will likely be very pleased with the results of your liposuction surgery. You may find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body.
Remember, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise will help maintain your new shape.
"After extensive research and consultations with three other doctors in town, I chose SurgiSpa for my SmartLipo on inner/outer thighs & posterior/anterior flanks. Dr. Cambeiro answered all my questions thoroughly without hesitation...and most importantly was honest! He put me at ease with any concerns I had and made me feel extremely comfortable during the consultation, as well as during the procedure. I was under local anesthesia during the procedure and he would continuously check that I was doing okay. Recovery and pain was minimal; I was up and back to work by day three. I am now seven weeks post-op and extremely satisfied with the results! I would highly recommend Dr. Cambeiro!" *

Below, Dr. Cambeiro answers some of the questions he is most frequently asked about liposuction.
Will the fat grow back after liposuction?
The body does not create more fat cells after they are removed; however, liposuction patients need to eat right and exercise consistently to maintain their results.
I don't like my belly. How do I know if I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?
Liposuction is used to remove areas of excess fat. Smartlipo can help the skin become firmer and tighter, but it does not address significant skin laxity. A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure I perform to remove loose, stretched skin and repair separated abdominal muscles. I often use liposuction to remove areas of fat when I perform tummy tuck surgery. During your consultation, I will perform a physical exam to determine which procedure is best suited to your needs.
Should I choose CoolSculpting® or liposuction?
We offer the full spectrum of body contouring options that range from the non-invasive CoolSculpting procedure, to the minimally invasive Smartlipo TriPlex liposuction, to tummy tuck surgery. In some cases patients find that Smartlipo is more affordable than CoolSculpting. In addition, Smartlipo involves a single procedure; CoolSculpting may require 2 or 3 treatments.
Will liposuction get rid of cellulite?
Although liposuction often gives the skin in treated areas a smoother appearance, it does not eliminate cellulite. Cellulaze™ is an effective cellulite treatment that I often perform along with liposuction or on its own.
I am unhappy with my liposuction results from another practice. Can you help?
Yes! I frequently see patients for correction of previous liposuction procedures. Often I perform Smartlipo, Cellulaze, and fat grafting to correct contour irregularities from liposuction performed by other providers.
