What to Expect After Surgery

Arrange to have an adult drive you home and stay with you for a few days after your liposuction procedure. If you live out of the area, plan to stay locally for a couple of days.

You will return home with treated areas wrapped in compression garments to help control swelling and assist in contouring the skin back down to the underlying muscle. You need to wear your compression garment for approximately a month as directed by Dr. Cambeiro.

You will need to take antibiotics for the first 5 days after surgery to lower the risk of infection. Prescription medication will help with the pain, but a feeling of soreness might persist for several days or several weeks.

First 1 to 2 Days

During the first 24 hours, your assigned caretaker will assist you in getting up to the bathroom, taking medications, eating, and drinking. During the first 12 to 24 hours you will follow a liquid diet and advance yourself to solids as tolerated.

Because the fat in treated areas is saturated with fluid during surgery, you will likely have some fluid drainage from your incisions. The amount of drainage can be dramatic if large areas are treated, so plan ahead to protect clothing, car seats, and mattresses. The drainage typically subsides within 48 hours.

You will be seen in our Henderson or Las Vegas office 1 to 2 days after you leave the hospital. The initial dressings will be removed and all incisions checked. You will then be able to shower.

4 Weeks & Beyond

It's important to be patient after your surgery. It may take you at least 6 weeks to begin feeling normal again. The skin in treated areas may feel numb and very hard to the touch initially, but it will soften with time. You might feel depressed or anxious initially; however, these feelings will subside as pain fades away and swelling subsides to reveal your improved contours.

Things to Avoid During Recovery

  • Do not drive until you are ready to return to normal daily activity and have stopped taking all narcotic medications.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise such as swimming, jogging, aerobics, and weight training for about a month; however, moderate exercise is encouraged.
  • Do not drink alcohol as it can cause you to retain fluid and delay your recovery.

Reasons to Call Us

Call the office immediately if you have any unusual symptoms such as:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • A temperature over 99.5 degrees
  • Chills or sweats
  • A markedly different degree of swelling between areas
  • Increasing rather than decreasing pain

Return to Work

Most patients can return to school and non-strenuous jobs in a few days to a week, and those with more strenuous jobs can return to physical work in 1 to 2 weeks.

Final Liposuction Result

If your expectations are realistic, you will likely be very pleased with the results of your liposuction surgery. You may find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body.

Remember, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise will help maintain your new shape.
