When Dr. Cambiero and his surgical team complete your breast reduction, they’ll gently move you to our recovery area. Dr. Cambeiro may insert small drainage tubes beneath the breast to prevent fluids from accumulating. He will dress the wounds with gauze dressings and apply a surgical garment or bra. We ask you to bring a responsible adult with you to the surgery center to drive you home and stay with you for several hours.
You will need to avoid strenuous activities such as bending, lifting, and sports for about three weeks. Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can lead to fluid retention and delays recovery.
You will probably feel tired and sore for a few days following your breast reduction surgery, but you will be up and about in 24-48 hours. You’ll be able to control most of your discomfort with medication. Dr. Cambiero will prescribe you antibiotics to take for five days after the procedure to lower the risk of infection.
You should be up and walking in the morning following your breast reduction surgery. We ask you to restrict your diet to something light in the first few days. You should be able to return to work within a few days to a week, depending on the level of activity required for your job.
You can shower 48 to 72 hours after the breast reduction procedure. Be careful not to immerse your incisions in water.
