During your initial visit, Dr. Cambeiro will perform a thorough medical exam and review your surgical history. He will need to know any current conditions and medications you are taking. If you smoke, you will need to quit for at least four weeks before surgery and four weeks after. Smoking decreases blood circulation to the skin and impedes healing.
He will ask you to have a baseline mammogram performed before surgery. Please inform him if there is a history of breast cancer in your family. Dr. Cambeiro will explain the anesthesia he’ll use during surgery, as well as any associated risks.

When Dr. Cambiero and his surgical team complete your breast reduction, they’ll gently move you to our recovery area. Dr. Cambeiro may insert small drainage tubes beneath the breast to prevent fluids from accumulating. He will dress the wounds with gauze dressings and apply a surgical garment or bra. We ask you to bring a responsible adult with you to the surgery center to drive you home and stay with you for several hours.
You will need to avoid strenuous activities such as bending, lifting, and sports for about three weeks. Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can lead to fluid retention and delays recovery.
You will probably feel tired and sore for a few days following your breast reduction surgery, but you will be up and about in 24-48 hours. You’ll be able to control most of your discomfort with medication. Dr. Cambiero will prescribe you antibiotics to take for five days after the procedure to lower the risk of infection.
