11 Important Questions to Ask

Eleven Important Questions to Ask When Choosing a Plastic Surgeon in Las Vegas

1. Is the doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

By far, there is no other board certification that has the same expertise and broad knowledge base as the American Board of Plastic Surgery; in fact, it’s the only board certification for plastic surgery. Check www.plasticsurgery.org for the doctor’s name. The American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery, American Board of Otolaryngology, American Board of Dermatology, and American Board of Cosmetic Surgery are NOT equivalent. You can also call the American Board of Medical Specialty certification verification service at 1-866-275-2267 or visit www.abms.org to check a doctor’s credentials. Dr. Cambeiro is an esteemed board-certified plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, which means he has completed 5 years of surgical training and a 2-year plastic surgery fellowship. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

2. Is the doctor a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?

Membership in this exclusive society is reserved for experienced plastic surgeons who are board certified in plastic surgery. Look for the symbol. Dr. Cambeiro is a distinguished cosmetic plastic surgeon in Las Vegas who is a member of this society.

3. Is your plastic surgeon a fellow of the American College of Surgeons?

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice. Members of the American College of Surgeons are referred to as “fellows.” The letters FACS (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after a surgeon’s name mean that the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College. Dr. Cambeiro is a fellow in good standing with the American College of Surgeons.

4. Does the doctor have admitting and plastic surgery hospital privileges?

Plastic surgeons should have admitting AND surgical privileges at a hospital. It is very important that the doctor be allowed to perform the same operation he performs on you at one of the local hospitals should a complication arise. You can call your local hospital to check to see if the doctor has both types of privileges. Dr. Cambeiro has hospital admitting and surgical privileges for all of the St. Rose Hospital campuses and at Sunrise Hospital.

5. Does the doctor use a board-certified anesthesiologist?

Your safety must come first. A board-certified anesthesiologist is a DOCTOR that has been trained specifically to administer anesthesia during an operation. Although more expensive, these are the most qualified individuals for this task. Dr. Cambeiro always uses board-certified anesthesiologists when performing cosmetic plastic surgery He does not use a nurse anesthetist (nurse’s anesthesia) and does not give the anesthesia himself. This allows Dr. Cambeiro to concentrate on the operative procedure and it gives the anesthesiologist the responsibility of monitoring your breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. Dr. Cambeiro will not cut corners. He believes your life and safety are well worth it.

6. Is the operation performed in an accredited facility?

All surgeries should be performed in an accredited facility. The accreditation ensures that operating facilities are compliant with sterilization techniques and various other health requirements. Dr. Cambeiro does NOT operate in his office. He performs all of his plastic surgery procedures at Parkway, Flamingo, and 7-Hills Surgery Centers, all of which are accredited surgery centers.

7. Does the physician have any disciplinary or malpractice lawsuits?

Visit www.fsmb.org or call 818-868-4000 to see if the plastic surgeon has any disciplinary actions pending against them. Dr. Cambeiro does not have disciplinary or malpractice lawsuits.

8. Is the doctor recognized by the community?

Dr. Cambeiro has been voted one of Las Vegas’ Top Docs by other physicians and nurses in Las Vegas Life magazine, voted Top Docs by Beauty Health and Fitness magazine, voted Top 40 individuals under 40 by In Business, and has been featured in the guide to America’s Top Plastic Surgeons 2006 through 2012. He also serves on the Foundation Board of Directors, the Community Board of Directors, and the ethics committee for all three St. Rose Hospitals. Dr. Cambeiro has also been featured in national magazines such as Glamour and Allure. He has most recently been awarded an appointment to NOVO, the National Advisory Council for Leaders in Breast Aesthetics, an elite group of fewer than 100 plastic surgeons who are at the forefront of aesthetic breast and facial surgery in the United States.

9. Does the doctor live locally?

If a plastic surgeon comes to Las Vegas to perform surgery and does not permanently reside here, you may find yourself in trouble should you need to see your doctor when he or she is out of the area. It is always best to establish a relationship with your plastic surgeon so that you can count on him being there for you when you need him most. Dr. Cambeiro was born and raised and permanently resides in the Las Vegas/Henderson area.

10. Does the doctor have a backup board-certified plastic surgeon covering his or her patients when out of town or unavailable?

You want to make sure you have good qualified care at all times. If the plastic surgeon does not have a board-certified plastic surgeon covering for him or her, you will end up seeing someone less qualified should you need the care of a physician while your plastic surgeon is out of town or unavailable. Dr. Cambeiro always ensures that another board certified, trustworthy, skilled plastic surgeon is available to look after his patients should he become unavailable. Of course, you would be advised on the rare occasion that this would occur.

11. Does the doctor have specific consents for photographs?

You will want to make sure your photographs are not posted on the internet or photo books without your consent. Most photo consents are all inclusive so beware of what you sign. Dr. Cambeiro has a well-illustrated consent that allows you choose if you want your pre- and post-operative pictures displayed. It also allows you to choose where you will allow your photographs to be seen.
