Women considering breast augmentation at my Las Vegas and Henderson, NV, practice often ask how they can minimize or avoid scarring and still achieve their desired results. Here are several things you can do, including incision location and type of procedure.
Consider your incision options
I offer the following 3 incision options when performing breast augmentation, each with its own pros and cons:
- Transaxillary (endoscopic) incision is placed within the normal crease of the armpit, so there is no risk of scarring on the breast. Other advantages of this incision include shorter recovery, reduced risk of complications, and preserved nipple sensation. However, this incision is not recommended with silicone implants and has an increased risk of capsular contracture.
- Inframammary incision is placed underneath the crease in the breast, so the scar is hidden as well. It does have the potential to be visible when laying down however. This incision works with all implant types.
- Periareolar incision runs along the lower portion of the areola. This incision is usually not noticeable and works with all implant types; however, it can lead to decreased nipple sensation, increased risk of capsular contracture, and can hinder breastfeeding.
When deciding which incision will work for you, it’s best to talk this over during your initial consultation.
Use special bandages
Patients may use a silicone-based bandage to reduce scarring over time. Do not use these bandages until 4 weeks after surgery, as the incisions need time to heal first. Silicone-based bandages or creams can help minimize the color and size of scars.
Watch your diet
Ensure you’re getting vitamin E in your diet by eating foods like almonds, tomatoes, spinach, and avocados. Eating healthy and staying away from alcohol will also help your body recover faster and reduce swelling while it heals.
Choose a non-surgical option
ThermiBreast™ is a nonsurgical option to consider for women who are happy with their breast size, but want to address mild to moderate sagging (ptosis) of the breasts and nipples. ThermiBreast™ utilizes radiofrequency (RF) energy to gently and gradually tighten the skin and tissues, providing subtle lifting and reshaping. The breast skin, tissues, and ligaments naturally tighten through increased blood flow and collagen production. This procedure is scar free.
