Top 5 Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon

If you’re thinking about any plastic surgery or MedSpa procedure, you probably have many questions for your prospective plastic surgeon here in Las Vegas. But what questions should be at the top of your list?

Here are the top 5 you should always ask. Click here to read the comprehensive list.

The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board certification for plastic surgery. Make sure to check www.plasticsurgery.org for the doctor’s name. Any other certifications are not equivalent. Surgeons with the ABPS certification have completed the following requirements:

  • Earned a degree from an accredited medical school
  • Completed 5 years of general surgery
  • Completed 2-3 years of supervised residency in plastic surgery
  • Practiced professionally for at least 2 years
  • Passed rigorous written and oral exams

Membership is reserved for experienced plastic surgeons who are board certified in plastic surgery. As a member, I support their mission as advocates for patient safety. ASPS surgeons must operate in accredited surgical facilities that have passed a rigorous external review of equipment and staffing.

Is the doctor recognized and trusted in the community?

As a native resident of the Las Vegas/Henderson area, I understand the importance of finding a doctor who is an active part of the community. I’m proud to have been voted one of Las Vegas’ Top Docs by other physicians and nurses in Las Vegas Life magazine for 11 consecutive years. Click to see the full list of Top Doctor awards and recognitions.

Does the doctor have admitting and plastic surgery hospital privileges?

Plastic surgeons should have admitting AND surgical privileges at a hospital. It is very important that the doctor be allowed to perform the same operation he performs on you at one of the local hospitals should a complication arise–they know your medical history and are the most qualified person to help you. You can call your local hospital to check to see if your doctor has both types of privileges.

I hold hospital admitting and surgical privileges for all of the St. Rose Hospital campuses and at Sunrise Hospital.

Does the doctor use a board-certified anesthesiologist?

Your safety must come first. A board-certified anesthesiologist is a DOCTOR who has been trained specifically to administer anesthesia during an operation. Although more expensive, these are the most qualified individuals for this task. I always use board-certified anesthesiologists when performing plastic surgery.
