What Exactly Is a “Mommy Makeover”?

If you’re like the mothers that frequently come into my practice, you really enjoy being a mom. However, you’re not alone in experiencing the changes that go along with pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, particularly to the breasts and midsection.

The “mommy makeover” is a blanket term, but most frequently includes procedures like breast enhancement and body contouring.

Who are the right candidates?

After pregnancy, some areas of the body change in ways that diet and exercise alone won’t reverse. If you look in the mirror and want to restore your pre-pregnancy body and are in good health, a combination of mommy makeover procedures may be right for you. Although the procedures won’t hinder your ability to have children, these procedures are best for women who are done having children, as pregnancy may compromise results.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

When ptosis (sagging) is the primary concern, breast lift (mastopexy) restores the breast tissue and nipples to a higher position and more youthful shape. If you have significant breast tissue volume loss, augmentation is also an option. A typical mommy makeover is some combination of breast augmentationliposuction, and tummy tuck procedures.

What should I expect during the makeover?

Patients will receive general anesthesia, and they are able to go home with family or a trusted friend the same day. I will follow the surgical plan discussed during your consultation.

What does recovery look like?

Because the procedures you choose are all performed at once, you’ll benefit from only having to endure one recovery. It’s also less expensive, as you only pay the anesthesia and operating room fees one time, rather than for multiple surgeries. Most patients will need three weeks to fully recover. Physical activities–or anything involving heavy lifting–should not be done for six weeks, or however long it takes you to feel fully recovered.

What about the results?

Your results should last indefinitely, as long as you eat right, exercise, and take the steps to maintain them. Pregnancy or significant weight gain can have an impact on overall results. I suggest moms wait until they are done having kids to have any of the mommy makeover procedures.
